Religion being the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially in Gods/Goddess’. Some also believe that it is a particular system of faith and worship or a pursuit or interest followed with great devotion.
Religion could be one of the most arguable topics in mankind. As a a religious believer in Hinduism I used to be very sceptical of the belief in many gods until last year I went to the gurdwara (temple) and really felt the presence of God flowing like a river through me. Religious experiences can be characterised generally as experiences that seem to the person to be of some objective reality and to have some religious import. This sort of scenario really put me on the edge of belief and really questioned me to think, why do I believe in God? Why do I go to the temple and sit on my knees bowing down to the Almighty. Now I know some of you out there might be wondering well believing in God is just ethically right but I wanted to know the true meaning behind belief. So I then went and asked everyone I knew. As expected my family memebers all told me either that they had grown up with a religion that seemed right to follow or that they found it like a moral compass, one which guides them like a train track to there destiny. I picked up on this ‘destiny point’ which I went on to explain.
I find this Hindu culture slightly controversial because we believe that God has planned our future yet to become our destiny, but we also believe that on a day to day basis we make decisions that shape out the rest of our lives. So the question here is; Is fate/destiny planned or do we mould our future by making on the spot decisions?
As a believer in Hinduism you often get asked questions around a right lifestyle of living. However I seek to question this. I am not 100% sure that Gods is surrounding me but I have a particular feeling about this and just as the word should be I have no hate or anger towards atheist. Nor do I do agree with them. I feel like I need a track to guide me. Something that can keep me sane. That feeling of secular morality just doesn’t work with me. I feel that my ethical thinking, like using my knowledge to decide what is good and bad, derives from my belief in Hinduism and that having a train track to follow and to drive and succeed on is all necessary to keep me sane and in worship.

What an interesting exploration of your thoughts Viren! I love your tolerance of differing opinions and ideas you see in the world. So I am going to try and push you a little more…
Religion – this is such a big, all encompassing term, isn’t it!?
But why have religion at all? Why associate it with a groups of Gods and goddesses? Why associate it with faith or morality? Is it possible for it to be something completely different – can we call science a religion? Can religion be someone’s passion of reading books, or video gaming, sports or a just a way of life? Are there people in this world who define it like this too?
Where did the idea of religion come from? How did it grow?
Is it possible that ’God‘, wasn’t always considered the ‘almighty’ who miraculously defines your destiny or answers your prayers. Perhaps it was a term coined by someone a super duper long time ago to describe things happening around them; perhaps citing their gratefulness and faith in it…? Perhaps the idea evolved and shaped itself differently along time and space.
Could ‘God’ perhaps described as the power that creates your reality – this being a combination of chance, and choices and the scientific and physical world that shapes it? …? Perhaps the universe itself…
With your insight into your own beliefs, away from what the world calls ‘religion’, I see you are beginning to define your own understanding of life and everything that makes you who you are… perhaps talking of what will some day become your very own religion…?
Keep exploring! Keep growing. God bless you!
